Song Meaning

Two songs are joined here, and the lyrics label them: a verse and chorus credited to Bethel Music's "King of My Heart," followed by a bridge credited to Maverick City Music's "You Keep On Getting Better." The opening verse stacks four images for the same King: the mountain to run to, the fountain to drink from, the shadow to hide in, and the ransom paid for a life. Each answers a different need, in the order refuge, thirst, shelter, redemption.

The chorus narrows to one repeated statement, "You are good, good, oh," with no verse attached to it. The bridge then shifts from who God is to how He behaves over time, "never gonna let me down," followed by the line that gives the medley its second title, "You keep on getting better." The claim is that goodness is not only steady but growing.

Psalm 18:2 supplies the mountain-and-refuge picture, Psalm 36:9 the fountain of life, and Mark 10:45 the ransom. Together they cover the whole verse in three references.

Verse 1

Let the King of my heart be

The mountain where I run

The fountain I drink from; oh

He is my song

Let the King of my heart be

The shadow where I hide

The ransom for my life; oh,

He is my song
