[Verse 1]
I'm sorry
For all the ways that make you question who I truly am
Do I love God? Do I love church? Is it all a show?
Tell us about the lion and the lamb
For dancing on stage, if I was truly saved
I wouldn't be wearing all these tight clothes
What matters to me now is that I let you down
It's the prodigal, I'm coming home
[Verse 2]
Sorry for collaborations and confessions on my soul
That Oprah trusting me was done
But I wasn't through, then I disappointed you
With the venom from my mouth, cursing out my son
I'm sorry I'm an easy target for the ones
That perform more than they practice
It's funny to see the last time you were in front of me
You were cogent, when did you turn Baptist?
[Chorus]
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
No condemnation, you still love me
Whether I'm wrong or right
Here's my life
Please free me tonight
[Verse 3]
I'm sorry if I'm in the way
And when it seems I'm the only one for the stage
But if you only knew for 30 years
I still can't believe that I'm still here
I'm sorry that I didn't know
A lot I did for you back then was just for show
I'm sorry that I didn't see
Sometimes I gave them less of you and more of me
To my four kids and my wife
There's been another love in my life
Truth is, she's always had my heart
Always there to say I love you from the start
I'm sorry that she took my time
Couldn't always think of you 'cause she had my mind
I admit, I hid it long enough
Music is my other love
[Chorus]
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
No condemnation, you still love me
Whether I'm wrong or right
Here's my life
Please free me tonight
[Chorus]
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
No condemnation, you still love me
Whether I'm wrong or right
Here's my life
Please free me tonight
[Chorus]
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
No condemnation, you still love me
Whether I'm wrong or right
Here's my life
Please free me tonight
[Outro]
It's the prodigal
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
Free Me Tonight
Song Meaning
Kirk Franklin writes a confession in the first person, apologizing to listeners who wonder whether he loves God or only the stage. He names the accusations directly: dancing in tight clothes, a public persona, collaborations that looked like compromise. Then he turns the apology on himself, admitting that some of what he did "was just for show" and that he sometimes gave people "less of you and more of me."
The third verse is the most exposed. He thanks his wife and four kids, then admits another love has competed for his heart, music itself, and says he hid it too long. Nothing in the lyric defends him. The prodigal son of Luke 15 appears as both opening and closing image: "I'm coming home."
The chorus answers the guilt with "No condemnation, you still love me / Whether I'm wrong or right," echoing Romans 8:1. Its plea, "Here's my life, please free me tonight," is repeated until it reads as a prayer of release more than a performance, and the song ends where it began, at the father's gate.
