Love

Kirk Franklin's "Love" spends its opening lines admitting how little the word actually communicates — "a word that comes and goes, but few people really know what it means to really love somebody" — before turning the rest of the song into a specific answer to that gap rather than another vague definition. The verses recall nights of crying and moments when hope was gone, naming despair directly instead of skipping past it to praise, which makes the declaration "you love me" land as something tested rather than assumed. "It's a mystery to me" repeats as almost a confession that the singer still doesn't fully understand why that love held on through those specific low points, only that it did. The closing lines — "patient, patient, kind, that's love" — lift language almost directly from Paul's description of love in his letter to the Corinthian church, but here it's not read aloud as doctrine; it's arrived at only after the personal story has already made the case, so the definition feels earned rather than recited.
