Kirk Franklin opens "I'm Free" addressing pain directly and specifically — "I know the pain you feel inside, and the tears you try to hide" — before the song ever gets to its title claim, refusing to rush past the hurt being described. "In your heart you ask God why" names the honest, sometimes accusatory question underneath suffering rather than only the polished version of it.
