Song Meaning

A question repeated to an unnamed "friend" drives Kriss Tee Hang's "Life Is Too Short": "where have you been?" Verse one finds the friend "chasing money," building "an empire of gold and desire," and too busy to spare time for himself or others. Verse two sharpens the accusation, with money burned on nothing "instead of helping," while "the kids on the street" go unnoticed.

The chorus counts out the decades, "now you're thirty," then forty, fifty, sixty, and ends on the line "We only live once in this world of no return." The final image is the sickbed, where the same man is "crying and begging about your health, asking to buy a time machine."

God is never named in the lyrics, so the faith connection is implicit, but the message is familiar from Scripture: numbering our days to gain a wise heart (Psalm 90:12), life as a mist that quickly vanishes (James 4:14), warnings about greed (Luke 12:15), and kindness to the poor as a loan to the Lord (Proverbs 19:17). The writer is credited as Hubert Dapliyan.

Life Is Too Short (The Time)

Songwriter: Hubert Dapliyan

My friend, where have you been? Chasing money every now and then?

Building an empire of gold and desire, do you have time for yourself?

My friend, where have you been? Always busy time and again?

Counting your fortune, mountain of fame but have you got time for them?

Life is too short, now you’re thirty

Time flies and you'll be forty

Do you know how much time you’ve got?

Life is too short, now you’re fifty

If time allows, you’ll be sixty

We only live once in this world of no return

My friend where have you been? Burning money every now and then?

Spending to nothing instead of helping, did you notice the kids on the street?

My friend where have you been? Are you tired lying on this bed?

Crying and begging about your health, asking to buy a time machine?

Life is too short, now you’re thirty

Time flies and you'll be forty

Do you know how much time you’ve got?

Life is too short, now you’re fifty

If time allows, you’ll be sixty

We only live once in this world of no return

Life is too short, now you’re thirty

Time flies and you'll be forty

Do you know how much time you’ve got?

Life is too short, now you’re fifty

If time allows, you’ll be sixty

We only live once in this world of no return

Life is too short, now you’re thirty

Time flies and you'll be forty

Do you know how much time you’ve got?

Life is too short, now you’re fifty

If time allows, you’ll be sixty

We only live once in this world of no return

We only live once in this world of no return
