Mercy

God speaks first in this one, and the voice is a wounded one: "What shall I do with you, my love?" The line is lifted from Hosea 6, where Israel's loyalty is compared to "morning clouds" and "the dew that goes away so early." Kristene DiMarco keeps that comparison intact, then sets the same question beside a modern habit of offering sacrifices "to ease your mind" when "it's your heart that I want."

Tenderness enters in the second half. The verse that asks "Hasn't it been a long road with disappointments, chasing after lovers that just throw you away?" is spoken with sympathy rather than accusation, followed by "are you done fighting now?" and the assurance that "shame was never meant to be your portion." The portrait is of a God who has watched the wandering and is not angry about it.

The answer comes in a thrice-repeated line borrowed from Isaiah 1:18: "Though these sins are red as scarlet, I will wash them white in My mercy." Repetition turns the promise into the center of the song, and the closing return to the opening question leaves it open for the listener to answer. Hosea 6:4 and 6:6 supply the sacrifice-versus-heart contrast that runs throughout.
