Nothing Can Separate

Pursuit is the central picture. God's love is "a love that never runs out" that "flows from the heart of my Father," and it "never forsakes" and "won't walk away." Lucy Grimble and Matt Redman put the verbs in motion: "God, your precious love is running after us." The second verse gives grace the same treatment, "a grace that never gives up" from "the heart of my Saviour," reaching "no matter the distance, no matter how far."

The chorus lists dimensions and powers that fail to split the singer from that love: "no height, no depth, no width, no length," and "no power in hell or here on the earth." The repetition of "nothing can separate us" reads as a plain declaration of settled security, the refrain being the whole argument.

The bridge describes the result as belonging. "There's a place where I'm truly found / there's a place where I'm fully known," it says, "in the very heart of God, I am home." Romans 8:38-39 is the clear source for the chorus, Ephesians 3:18 supplies the breadth, length, height and depth of Christ's love, and Psalm 23:6 matches the goodness and mercy that follow the believer.
