Only a Step Away

Marshall Marshall builds the whole song out of contrasts that only make sense together — "I'm dry land, You're wildfire," "I'm a desert, You're a rainstorm," "I'm a mountain and You're the skyline." Each pairing describes something incomplete meeting something that completes it, not two equal forces.

The chorus narrows all of that imagery down to one plain scene: "when I say I'm sorry, Your love is only a step away." There's no waiting period built into the song, no probation before the welcome — the distance closes the moment the words are spoken.

James 4:8 promises that anyone who draws near to God will find God drawing near in return, and the father in Luke 15:20 runs to meet his son "while he was yet a great way off," not waiting for him to finish the walk alone. Marshall Marshall's repeated title treats reconciliation less like a process to complete and more like a single step that was always available.
