Exodus

Instead of loosely retelling Israel’s escape from Egypt, “Exodus” draws its words from the aftermath of the golden calf in Exodus 33. The people remove their ornaments at Horeb, and Moses pitches the tabernacle outside the camp. That distance gives weight to the scene: sin has disrupted fellowship, yet a place remains where anyone seeking the Lord may go.

The narrative then watches Moses walk toward the tent while the people rise at their own doors. Exodus 33:7 identifies the tabernacle as the meeting place outside the camp, and verse 8 describes the people standing as Moses departs. Verse 10 completes the response as they see the pillar of cloud and worship. The chorus lingers on that collective act—“all the people rose up and worshiped”—rather than rushing past it. Reverence grows from recognizing both God’s holiness and his mercy in continuing to meet with his servant. By setting the biblical passage directly to music, Maverick City Music and Kirk Franklin invite listeners to hear worship as a response to restored access: God is to be sought, his presence cannot be treated casually, and a watching community can bow together when he draws near.
