Maverick City Music and UpperRoom sing “You Hold It All Together” as a song about timing. The first verse says God comes “at the right time, when I least expect it, never behind,” and the singer then questions their own surprise: “So why would I be surprised when you deliver every time?” It reads like someone reasoning with themselves after a rescue.
The pre-chorus gives the contrast the title depends on: “On mountaintops you stay the same, in valleys low you never change.” The chorus then states a hope with some muscle in it, “I believe that I will see the goodness of the Lord,” and a reason, “I'm confident as seasons change, Your faithfulness remains.” The second verse describes God going ahead of the singer, preparing blessings that are “more than I could imagine.” The bridge sums up the song with three titles, “God of my present, God of my future, you write my story.”
Psalm 27:13, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord,” is the source of the chorus. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. The title phrase comes from Colossians 1:17, where in him all things hold together.
