Gotta Let It Go

MercyMe addresses someone still gripping their old identity in "Gotta Let It Go" — "you got that white knuckle, red faced kung fu grip on all your chains, but that's not who you are." The image is deliberately physical and almost comic, naming the effort it takes to hold onto something that's supposedly already gone.

"Stop taking flowers to the grave of the old you that died" keeps the metaphor consistent and specific rather than switching to a vaguer image of change, and "if God can take your sin and free ya, forget just like amnesia, why are you holding on" names the actual contradiction being pointed out — grasping something God has already released.

"You were made for something more" repeats as the song's entire argument for letting go — not that the old self was worthless, but that holding onto it is holding someone back from what they were actually made for.
