Reality Prayer

A veil is the central image, one "as black as the sin by which it was created," spread over "every corner of the world." The singer asks plainly, "Can it be lifted? Lord, I sure hope so." Then he looks at believers on their knees with "doubt in their voice," speaking to their Father in "so many formalities," and wishes instead for the child left in us to cry, "Please, please, oh daddy, please."

The pre-chorus turns on faith: "If faith so small can move mountains / Can we not believe enough to be set free?" The bridge answers with the torn temple curtain. "You know He tore the veil once / He can tear it again," and He can "bring us in / From the reign of sin." The closing chorus gives the response, calling God almighty and the Holy One, "our hope," "our salvation," and "the one thing to cling to."

Matthew 27:51 records the curtain tearing at the crucifixion, and Hebrews 10:19 explains what that opened: confident entry into the holy place through Jesus. Matthew 17:20 stands behind the line about small faith and mountains, and Hebrews 4:16 invites approaching the throne of grace with boldness, which is the kind of prayer the song wishes for.
