Shine On

MercyMe opens with a conditional that sets up the whole song's logic — "if we're to be the light that shines for all of man, then how can we light the way if we don't go to them?" Light that stays put, they suggest, isn't doing what light is for.

Their definition of worship follows the same practical bent: "I believe we worship Christ when we show the world His light." MercyMe isn't describing a private glow to maintain — they're describing something meant to be visible in "all that's said and done," ordinary actions carrying the weight of the message.

Jesus tells his followers in Matthew 5:14-16 that a city on a hill can't be hidden, and instructs them to let their light shine before others rather than hiding it under a basket, and Paul calls believers to "shine as lights in the world" in Philippians 2:15. MercyMe's short, repeated chorus turns that instruction into something closer to an invitation than a command — "won't you shine on."
