This Life

A feeling of not belonging begins "This Life": "This is not my home, this is not my space, this is not my style, this is not my place. Can't get comfortable, can't get settled in." MercyMe's lines about being a stranger in this world are close to 1 Peter 2:11 and Philippians 3:20, which says a believer's citizenship is in heaven.

That feeling does not turn into escape. "I don't have to stall, I don't have to wait, don't have to bide my time till I make my escape, 'cause heaven's in my heart, I won't settle for less," the singers say, and "I will lift Your name by the life I live." A recurring phrase, "make the most of me, this won't go to waste," frames the present as a task.

The chorus supplies the purpose: "Every moment is a chance to let Your light break through. This life was meant to shine," a line that lines up with Matthew 5:16 and Ephesians 5:16 on making the most of the time. The bridge calls on listeners, "hold your heads up high, this is our moment to rise, we were meant to shine, not just survive," and the song closes with "I'll live every day just to make You known."
