The Story I Tell
Song Meaning
Micah Tyler's “The Story I Tell” steps into the lives of people from the Gospels and then into ordinary people today. The first verse lists them in the first person: the woman at the well, the leper told not to tell, the paralyzed man whose four friends “busted up the roof,” the widow who gave her last dime, the blind man with mud in his eye, and a woman known by too many men who heard stones hit the sand.
The chorus gives the reason these stories matter: “Nobody knew the troubles I'd seen, nobody knew my shame, nobody knew the places I'd been, I didn't know how to change. He saw a hope that I did not see, He saw a better way.” The song also says “the unbelievable thing about the story I tell is that you don't even know my name.” The second verse adds the prodigal, the man made sane when the swine drowned, and the thief on the cross. A later verse brings the list to the present with the homeless person on the street and those with nothing to eat, and says that looking away feels “like a slap across my cheek.” The song asks the listener to see people the way Jesus saw them.
The woman at the well is John 4:7-26. The paralyzed man lowered through the roof is Mark 2:3-5, and the prodigal's welcome is Luke 15:20.
I was the leper who was told not to tell
I was so paralyzed, I never had moved
Until 4 of my friends who wouldn't give in went and busted up the roof
I was the widow who gave up my last dime
I was the blind man with the mud in his eye
I was the woman known by too many men
And as I covered my face, He uncovered His grace, as I heard stones hit the sand
Nobody knew the troubles I'd seen
Nobody knew my shame
Nobody knew the places I'd been
I didn't know how to change
He saw a hope that I did not see
He saw a better way
And the unbelievable thing about the story I tell
Is that you don't even know my name
I was the prodigal once lost but now found
I was made sane the day the swine were all drowned
I was the thief that was hung up to die
But the Son the Man looked at my cross I was bearing
And decided to give me life
Nobody knew the troubles I'd seen
Nobody knew my shame
Nobody knew the places I'd been
I didn't know how to change
He saw a hope that I did not see
He saw a better way
And the unbelievable thing about the story I tell
Is that you don't even know my name
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Even knows my name
I am the homeless wandering round on your street
I live across the world with nothing to eat
I'm locked in prison with a chain on my dreams
And when you see me every day, and you look the other way
It's like a slap across my cheek
Nobody knows the troubles I'd seen
Nobody knows my shame
Nobody knows the places I'd been
I don't know how to change
He sees a hope that I do not see
He sees a better way
And the unbelievable thing about the story I tell
Is that you don't even know my name
See the unbelievable thing about the story I tell
Is that you don't even know my name
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Even knows my name
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Nobody, nobody
Even knows my name
