The Incident

Michelle Williams tells the Samaritan woman's story from the inside, using her own name and voice rather than narrating the encounter from a distance — 'remember that girl Michelle, you know that chick from the well' turns John 4's unnamed woman into someone with an actual identity people still gossip about years later. The title itself borrows the town's own dismissive language for what happened to her, an 'incident,' small and vaguely scandalous rather than the actual turning point it was.

'You knew everything about me long before the Incident at the Well' echoes John 4:29's account of the woman running to tell her town, 'come, see a man who told me everything that I did' — the same detail that convinced her he was more than an ordinary stranger. 'They don't know the half of it... how you took my broken heart and put it back again' answers John 4:39's report that many believed 'because of the word of the woman' — her testimony, dismissed as gossip by some, was the actual evidence that convinced an entire town.
