God Only Knows

Naomi Raine spends the verses describing someone specific rather than everyone in general — awake while the world sleeps, convinced that "nobody, nobody, nobody sees you," carrying memories that "somehow never leave you." It's a portrait of isolation before the song offers anything like comfort.

The answer the chorus gives doesn't rush to fix the loneliness; it just relocates who's actually watching. "God only knows what you've been through... God only knows the real you" turns the isolation inside out — the same invisibility that felt like abandonment gets reframed as being fully known by someone the person didn't realize was paying attention.

David makes the identical claim in Psalm 139, that God has searched him and known him before a word is even on his tongue, and the promise that God is close to the brokenhearted backs up the chorus's insistence that this isn't distant sympathy. Even the phrase "a kind of love that God only knows" resists being explained further — the song settles for naming it rather than defining it.
