Pentatonix's a cappella arrangement keeps the carol's simplest, oldest move intact — a poor boy with nothing to give but a drum, standing next to wise men bringing gold. 'I have no gift to bring that's fit to give our King' names the gap directly rather than skipping past it, and the song doesn't resolve it by having the boy find something more valuable to offer.

Instead, 'I played my drum for Him, I played my best for Him' answers the problem with effort rather than value — the gift that gets accepted isn't gold-equivalent, it's simply everything the boy actually has. That's close to the spirit of Matthew 2:11's account of the wise men opening their treasures before the child, except inverted: here it's the person with nothing who becomes the story's actual center. 'Then He smiled at me' is the whole theology of the song in four words — acceptance that has nothing to do with the size of the gift.
