God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

The old carol gets a bright, modern reading here, its familiar opening — a call to let nothing dismay the listener — giving way to a refrain that keeps returning to comfort and joy like a bell rung over and over. The middle verses retell the angel's announcement to the shepherds in Bethlehem, naming the child as the Son of God and framing his birth as rescue from Satan's power for people who had wandered off. Where the traditional verses pause, a repeated declaration takes over: fear not, we bring news of great joy, hallelujah — a line that turns the shepherds' midnight fright into a congregational shout. The closing verse shifts from story to instruction, urging everyone in the room to sing praises and to embrace one another in true love and brotherhood, treating the Christmas season as something that outshines everything else around it. The song's center of gravity is that announcement — good news delivered to ordinary people in a field — and the way it moves from reassurance to praise without much distance in between.
