Nothing But The Blood
Song Meaning
Rita Springer's version of this same 1876 Robert Lowry hymn trims it down to its barest form — just the refrain and one verse, repeated, no bridge or added material. "That makes me white as snow" pulls from Isaiah 1:18's offer that sins "red like crimson" can become "as wool," "as white as snow" — a color change used as shorthand for something deeper than appearance.
The hymn's whole argument is compressed into one repeated question and answer, and Romans 5:9's claim that believers are "justified by his blood" names the same mechanism Lowry's refrain keeps returning to — not effort, not other remedies, just the one source the hymn refuses to substitute for anything else, verse after verse.
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
