Sounds Like Grace

River Valley Worship's “Sounds Like Grace” begins as a request to hear the story again. “Tell me the story, tell me again, that I was a drifter that you welcomed in. Sing me Your mercy, sing me that song, that here in Your goodness is where I belong.” The singer is not looking for something new but for the familiar truth to be spoken over him once more.

The verses describe the change that follows. “I can hear the echoes of my past fading in my Father's eyes. Feels like the first time I'm really alive.” Another line says he can hear “the ruins of my heart learnin' how to beat again.” At that point the sound shifts: “Then suddenly, it sounds like grace to me.” The chorus addresses the Savior directly, thanking him for loving the singer as he was, and says “grace be Your measure of all that's to come.” The bridge, “Oh how sweet the sound that saved me,” borrows from the words of “Amazing Grace,” which fits the song's focus on listening. Each time the title phrase returns, it brings the listener back to the same assurance of welcome.
