First Love

Rekindling lost devotion drives the song, and the first verse sets the standard it wants to return to: a time of being unable to get enough, a heart "skipping beats until it soared," pictured as a kite on a ribbon and a record that's tripping. The second verse admits what followed. "I was a fast fool / I let that flame cool / Took for granted all your love for me."

Drift gets its own images, a runaway train, a car in the wrong lane, a bit off track, before a snap of the fingers marks the turn back. The chorus chants "gotta get back" and asks to be rewound "to the start," with the plea "Remind me how I first loved You" carrying nearly every closing line. A late section strips the rhythm down to a plain declaration, "There's no one else for me but you," and finally names the one being addressed: "Jesus, remind me how I first loved you."

Revelation 2:4 names the very problem, a church that abandoned the love it had at first. Psalm 51:12 asks for the joy of salvation to be restored, and Jeremiah 2:2 recalls the devotion of early days, which is the memory the singer asks to have refreshed.
