Steven Curtis Chapman builds the first verse as pure historical narrative — Cortez's 1519 landing in Mexico, his order to burn the ships so retreat wasn't an option — before the second verse runs the identical structure over a spiritual journey instead: 'a searching heart set sail, looking for a new life... on the shores of grace and mercy it landed with great joy.' The parallel does real work; both stories turn on the same moment, a point past which going back stopped being possible.
'An enemy was waiting to steal kill and destroy' lifts John 10:10 almost word for word, naming resistance to the new life in the same terms Jesus used to describe the thief who opposes his own purpose of abundant life.
