Tenth Avenue North addresses this one to someone specific — not a stranger, but a friend from the same background who's drifted somewhere different: "you may look like me, but it seems you're really different on the inside... we came from the same town and the same families." The song names the distance without pretending it can explain it.

"So how did we come to see so differently, after all this time" repeats as an honest confusion rather than an accusation, and "why? I'm asking you why?" refuses to resolve into an easy answer across the whole song.

"If the sheep know his voice then tell me what is the choice for the ones who haven't heard" borrows directly from Jesus' own description of sheep recognizing their shepherd's voice, applying it to someone who simply hasn't heard it yet rather than someone who's rejected it outright. "Father, help me understand" turns the confusion itself into a prayer, and "please Lord open up his eyes" asks for exactly what Paul describes happening when the god of this age no longer blinds unbelieving minds.
