The Petersens perform 'Go Tell John,' a song based on the biblical story of John the Baptist's doubt while imprisoned. The lyrics recount how Jesus sent messengers to reassure John of His identity as God's Son and the payment for sin. The song emphasizes that Jesus welcomes honest questions and doubts, and that He is exactly who He claims to be. It draws directly from Matthew 11:2-5, where Jesus tells John's disciples to report the miracles they witness. The song encourages listeners to bring their uncertainties to Jesus and trust in His purpose.

John sat in a prison cell alone

Thinking about the life that he had chose

Was it just for nothin' that he would give his life?

Then Jesus sent the answer before he was to die

Go tell John, I am God's only son

Go tell John, I am the payment for the damage sin has done

Go tell John, he is the reason I have come

Go tell John, hurry, go tell John

As wicked people plotted out his death

Questions came at Satan's old request

As the tempter made him doubt our blessed Lord

Jesus sent the answers to what he battled for

Go tell John, I am God's only son

Go tell John, I am the payment for the damage sin has done

Go tell John, he is the reason I have come

Go tell John, hurry, go tell John

Oh, go tell John, I am God's only son

Go tell John, I am the payment for the damage sin has done

Go tell John, he is the reason I have come

Go tell John, hurry, go tell John

Hurry, go tell John [x3]

Song Story

?This song talks about one of my favorite stories from the Bible. John the Baptist, Jesus's cousin and the one that baptized him and prepared the way, has a moment of doubt when he is in prison.

Matthew 11:2-5 "Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?" And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them"."

As soon as John's followers left, Jesus turned back to the crowd he was teaching and complimented John. He wasn't nervous or offended about his doubts. I love this because I am reminded that I can always go to Jesus about anything and He welcomes the questions. Jesus was not acting the way John the Baptist thought he would. So many times I am in a situation and I cannot understand why my friend is sick, why children are suffering, why some wicked people are rewarded with wealth and easy lives, and why is God not smiting this person who so blatantly wronged me. In my tiny little brain, God is not acting the way I think He should. This story reminds me that God is exactly who He says He is. He's the payment for my sin and He came to this earth to rescue me and rescue you.
