For my waking breath
For my daily bread
I depend on You
I depend on You
For the sun to rise
For my sleep at night
I depend on You
I depend on You
You’re the way the truth and the life
You’re the well that never runs dry
I’m the branch and You are the vine
Draw me close and teach me to abide
Where the Spirit leads
As I’m following
I depend on You
I depend on You
For the victories
Still in front of me
I depend on You
I depend on You
You’re the way the truth and the life
You’re the well that never runs dry
I’m the branch and You are the vine
Draw me close and teach me to abide
Be my strength my song in the night
Be my all my treasure my prize
I am Yours forever You're mine
Draw me close and teach me to abide
When I pass through death
As I enter rest
I depend on You
I depend on You
For eternal life
To be raised with Christ
I depend on You
I depend on You
Oh would you teach me
Would You teach me to abide
I depend on You
I depend on You
Abide
Song Meaning
The Worship Initiative and Davy Flowers perform “Abide,” written by Aaron Keyes and Aaron Williams. The first verse lists the ordinary things the singer depends on: “For my waking breath, for my daily bread, I depend on You, for the sun to rise, for my sleep at night.” The chorus then names who God is, “You're the way, the truth and the life, You're the well that never runs dry,” and gives the picture the song is about: “I'm the branch and You are the vine, draw me close and teach me to abide.”
The second verse asks for guidance into the future, “where the Spirit leads, as I'm following, for the victories still in front of me.” The bridge asks him to “be my strength, my song in the night,” and to be “my treasure, my prize.” The third verse looks to the end of life. “When I pass through death, as I enter rest, for eternal life, to be raised with Christ.” The question stays the same through the song, “Would You teach me to abide?”
Branch and vine are from John 15:5, and the way, the truth and the life is John 14:6. A thirst for God matches Psalm 63:1.
