Finally Breathing

Tim Timmons starts “Finally Breathing” with an honest gap between creed and conduct: “I believe that you are good,” yet “Why on earth am I so scared / Am I so controlling?” The second half of the verse asks the same about mercy. If he has been forgiven, why does that not change “the way that I’m living?”

The chorus supplies the turn. “If all I do is just believe / I’ll miss the forest for the trees,” and “If all I do is just survive / I’ll waste this one and only life.” What shifts him is love rather than willpower: “Your love moves me to my feet.” Verse two sharpens the point with two plain pictures, a diamond ring that cannot make a lover and a child’s birth that cannot make a father, before admitting “My faith is truly dead / If I keep it all in my head” and asking God to “come alive inside my chest.”

The bridge turns that into rhythm, “breathe in, breathe out / In every moment,” with a promise to “take the next step.” The stacked “I’m finally breathing” lines at the end sound more like relief than triumph.
