At The Cross

Song Meaning

Tommee Profitt builds his setting of "At the Cross" around the old hymn's central question — whether a Sovereign would bow a sacred head for a sinner. The verses keep that wondering tone, asking if it was for the singer's own crimes that Christ groaned on the tree, and answering with the phrase "amazing pity, grace unknown." The chorus turns from question to testimony: at the cross the burden of the heart is rolled away, and it is there the singer receives sight by faith, a line that echoes the language of blind Bartimaeus and of John Newton's "Amazing Grace." A later verse asks for the heart to be dissolved in thankfulness and the eyes to be brought to tears, then names the paradox at the center of the hymn — the mighty Maker dying, sin and shame erased when the cross appeared. The closing stanza admits that drops of grief could never pay the debt of love owed, so the singer simply gives himself away, calling that surrender all he can do. The repeated "at the cross" refrain, sung over sparse, echoing space, keeps the focus fixed on that one location rather than on the singer's feelings.

At last, and did my Savior bleed
And did my Sovereign die?
Would You devote that sacred head
For such a sinner as I?

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Was it for crimes that I had done (ooh)
That you groaned upon the tree? (ooh)
Amazing pity, grace unknown (ooh)
Ooh, and love beyond degree!

At the cross, at the cross
Where the burden of my heart was rolled away
At the cross, ooh, at the cross
It was there that I received my sight by faith

At the cross
Mm-mm
At the cross
Mm-mm

Dissolve my heart in thankfulness
And bring my eyes to tears
For Christ, the mighty Maker died
All sin and shame erased when that cross appeared

At the cross, at the cross (at the cross)
Where the burden of my heart was rolled away (rolled away, it's rolled away)
At the cross, at the cross (ooh, at the cross, at the cross)
It was there that I received my sight by faith

At the cross (ooh, ooh)
At the cross (ooh, ooh)
At the cross (ooh, ooh)
At the cross (ooh, ooh)

But drops of grief could never pay
The debt of love I owe
Here, Lord, I give myself away
It's all that I can do
