The second verse's insistence on silence — the gift given without fanfare, a coming no ear can hear — sits alongside the closing petition for the Christ child to descend, cast out sin, and be born in us today. The song moves from observation to invitation, ending not on the manger scene but on a request that Emmanuel abide with the singer. The word "Gloria" punctuates each chorus like a bell, brief and unadorned. Profitt's arrangement leans into that contrast between stillness and breaking light, so the carol reads less as nostalgia and more as a present-tense plea for the holy to enter ordinary, darkened streets.
