We Three Kings

Song Meaning

Tommee Profitt's take on the Epiphany carol keeps the Magi's journey at its center, tracing the wise men as they cross field, fountain, moor, and mountain under a single guiding star. Each verse unfolds one of the three gifts and what it reveals: gold for a king who reigns without end, frankincense for a deity whose worship rises as prayer and praise, and myrrh for the bitter foreshadowing of suffering, death, and a sealed tomb. That third verse is the song's darkest turn, its perfume breathing gloom rather than joy, and it gives the familiar carol real weight. The refrain returns to the star of wonder and night, asking it to lead westward still toward perfect light, a plea repeated until it becomes the song's final line. The closing verse breaks the tension with the risen King, named as God and sacrifice, while alleluias ring through earth and skies. The arrangement moves from pilgrimage to grief to triumph, holding the manger and the empty tomb in the same breath, and the repeated star refrain ties the whole arc together as a prayer for guidance.

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts, we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising, voices raising
Worshiping God on high

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom
Sorr'wing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone cold tomb

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Sounds through the earth and skies

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

Your perfect light
