Open Up The Heavens

Hunger for God's visible glory drives the song from its first line. A gathered church declares "we've waited for this day," describes glory "like a fire" that awakens desire and burns hearts with truth, and gives the reason for the whole gathering in a plain pair of lines: "You're the reason we're here, you're the reason we're singing."

The chorus turns that hunger into a request. "Open up the heavens, we want to see you" is followed by floodgates and "a mighty river flowing from your heart," a picture of worship being filled from above instead of produced from below. The second verse looks upward, with God's presence "descending like a cloud" and a prayer to "unveil our eyes." Near the end the lyric strips down to a repeated cry, "Show us your glory, show us your power," and finally to "we want to see you."

Scripture echoes are easy to hear. Isaiah 64:1 pleads for God to rend the heavens and come down, Malachi 3:10 speaks of windows of heaven opened wide, and Exodus 33:18 records Moses asking to see God's glory. The river imagery is close to John 7:38.
