Go Tell It on the Mountain

Zach Williams, Maverick City Music, Elevation Worship, and Israel Houghton stay close to the traditional spiritual's structure but adds a distinct third verse: 'when I was a seeker, I sought both night and day... he made me a watchman upon a city wall, and if I am a Christian, I am the least of all.' That's a real departure from the usual nativity-only lyric — turning a song about shepherds receiving news into one that ends with the singer's own personal testimony of having once been the seeker instead of the messenger.

'While shepherds kept their watching over silent flocks by night' follows Luke 2:8-11 closely, down to the angels' announcement and the shepherds' fear before the news itself. The repeated command structure — 'go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere' — makes the shepherds' original commission double as an instruction to whoever sings it now, collapsing the gap between the first people to hear the news and everyone since who's been asked to pass it on.
