Zach Williams builds the entire song as a murder confession before revealing, only gradually, that the 'man' being killed is the singer's own former self — 'I killed a man in the river' describes baptism in language deliberately chosen to sound like something far more sinister. Romans 6:6's claim that 'our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with' sits directly behind the conceit; the violence in the song's language isn't exaggeration, it's the accurate weight of what Paul actually says happens.

'That's the day that I saw the light, 'bout six feet out in the Buffalo, was my Damascus road' pulls Acts 9:3's account of Paul's conversion — 'a light from the sky shone around him' — into an ordinary river in rural America, collapsing the distance between a first-century apostle's dramatic encounter and an unremarkable baptism decades later. 'Nobody's gonna miss that prodigal son' names who actually died in the river: not a stranger, but the specific old identity the song has spent every verse describing.
