Worth Reprise (Love Lifted Me)
Song Meaning
"Love, not religion" is the line that carries this reprise. The singer is lifted "when nothing could help," and the credit goes to God's love rather than to anything he did or tried. A parenthetical echo, "it was Your love, that lifted," trails each phrase like a congregation answering the leader, so the same claim lands again and again until it feels settled.
The second half turns to what that love saw when it looked at him. "You thought I was worth saving," then worth keeping, then "to die for." Each judgment is paired with an action that follows from it: God came and changed a life, cleaned him up inside, and sacrificed His own life "so I could be free." The order runs from rescue to cleansing to freedom, and the lyric breaks off on "Halle..." as though praise has outrun the words.
The title points back to the old hymn "Love Lifted Me," and the theology fits familiar passages: Romans 5:8 on Christ dying for people still in their sin, Psalm 40:2 on being drawn up from the pit, and Ephesians 2:8 on salvation as a gift of grace instead of a reward for effort.
Love, lifted me
Love, not religion
Lifted me
When nothing could help
(It, was, Your, Love
That lifted me)
Love (love)
Love (love lifted me)
Love (love lifted me)
When nothing else (when nothing else could, help)
It was Your love (it was Your love, that lifted)
It was Your love (it was Your love, that lifted)
It was Your love (it was Your love, that lifted, me)
You thought I was worth saving
So You came and changed my life
You thought I was worth keeping
So You cleaned me up inside
You thought I was to die for
So You sacrificed Your life
So I could be free
Halle...
