Love Lifted Me

Ashmont Hill's “Love Lifted Me” is a worship song of rescue and gratitude, and its title shares a phrase with the old hymn by James Rowe, though the words are new. It begins with the angels' song, “Glory, glory to God in the highest,” and moves to the singer's reason for it: “When nothing else could help, You came and rescued me, Your love lifted me.”

The response is freedom. “I am free to sing of Your love,” the singer repeats, and the choir answers with “Hallelujah, it's Your love, it's Your love.” The chorus then compares that love with some of the largest things we can picture, “higher, higher, higher than heaven, deeper, deeper, deeper than oceans, greater, greater, greater than mountains.” Each comparison is stated three times, so the list builds in force. The final line comes back to the main claim, “Your love lifted me.” The song is short and rests on call and response, which makes it easy for a congregation to join in once the first chorus is sung.

Being lifted from the pit is Psalm 40:2. The breadth and depth of Christ's love is Ephesians 3:18-19, and glory to God in the highest is Luke 2:14.
