Your Masterpiece

Ashmont Hill's “Your Masterpiece” follows the life of Christ in a few lines and then stays at the cross. It begins with the birth, “King of all Kings, born in a manger, the greatest story told,” and moves to the carpenter who “walked on the earth” and “came to fix my broken soul.”

The chorus uses the language of art. Jesus paid it all “on the cross with blood you painted, Your Masterpiece,” and his outstretched arms are called “a portrait, for all to see.” The singer calls him “Gentle King” and describes his love as “selfless love hanging on a tree, for me.” The next lines list his titles and works: healer of nations, God of creation, master of miracles, who “broke every chain” as the Lamb that was slain. The ending is a quiet declaration of devotion, “You're beautiful, my Savior, I'm captured by Your love.” The painting image keeps the focus on the cross as something to look at and wonder over, and the repeated closing line lets a congregation sing it back softly.

The manger birth is Luke 2:7. Being wounded for our transgressions is Isaiah 53:5, and the carpenter is named in Mark 6:3.
