Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Song Meaning
Avalon's recording keeps Thomas Chisholm's 1923 hymn text intact: "there is no shadow of turning with Thee, Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not." The phrase reaches for James 1:17's description of the Father of lights as the one "with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow."
"As Thou has been, Thou forever will be" echoes Numbers 23:19's claim that God is "not a man, that he should lie... has he said, and will he not do it?" "Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow" keeps the hymn's scope split evenly between present need and future confidence, neither one treated as more important than the other.
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changes not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou has been, Thou forever will be
Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me
Pardon for sin and a peace that endure
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside
Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
And all I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me
