Baby Boy

The nativity is told in a father's voice, speaking to the child. "I don't know how much you know with how you came into this world," Brandon Heath begins, "I was young and unprepared, your mom herself was just a girl." The details are small and human, "he was pacing round the room, made a bed for you in hay," and a whispered "breathe" during the birth.

The chorus lets two views sit together: "You're everything we prayed you would be, more promise in your eyes than I have ever seen. You're the Prince of Peace, our Savior, Lord and King, Heaven's pride and joy, but you're still our baby boy." The titles are from Isaiah 9:6, and the manger bed of hay is from Luke 2:7.

The second verse jumps ahead: "when I look at you now, a man is looking back at me. I taught you everything I know, but you do more than I could dream, there's so much mercy in your touch." The last request is the point of the song, "we can't keep you to ourselves, go save the world now, baby boy," which is Matthew 1:21's promise that He will save His people.
