Jesus In Disguise

Brandon Heath's “Jesus in Disguise” asks whether we notice God at work in ordinary encounters. The first verse describes odd, unspoken pressures: “Ever get something in your head? It's nothing you heard or something you read. Ever had a cut but you never saw a blade? Brought to your knees, but you never prayed.” These lines name the feeling of being moved before one knows why.

The chorus gives the title and some images: “Jesus in disguise, Jehovah passing by, the burden of a tear hanging in your eye.” It then says, “You were looking for a king you would never recognize.” The second verse speaks of a sense of having been somewhere before, holding a key and knowing which door to open. The bridge turns the song into a prayer, “So open my eyes wide as I can, blind as I am.” The song suggests that Christ often arrives in the form of a stranger, a need or a hard moment, and that the listener should be ready to see him there.
