The Commission

Song Meaning

CAIN sets "The Commission" entirely in Jesus's own voice, quoting his post-resurrection words to the disciples: "See my hands, look at my feet" before turning them toward the work ahead — "go tell the world about me, I was dead, but now I live." The verses lean on the same details Luke records of the risen Christ showing his wounded hands and feet as proof he was no ghost, and on Jesus holding the keys of death itself. Between those lines sits the tension the whole song rests on: a farewell that is also a beginning. "Goodbye is not the end" because there's a promise attached — "I'll come back again" — and a purpose in the meantime, carrying the same charge Jesus gave to make disciples of every nation. The production stays uncluttered, mostly guitar and voice, so the words carry the weight: obedience now, hope later. It reads less like a song about believing in the resurrection and more like one about what a person does once they do — pack up, go, and tell somebody.

See my hands, look at my feet

It’s okay, if it’s hard to believe

I have faith you will do greater things

It’s my time to go, but before I leave

Go tell the world about me

I was dead, but now I live

I’ve gotta go now for a little while

But goodbye is not the end

Don’t forget the things that I taught you

I’Ve conquered death and I hold the keys

Where I go you will go too, someday

There’s much to do - here before you leave

So, go tell the world about me

I was dead, but now I live

I’ve gotta go now for a little while

But goodbye is not the end

End of the journey

The end of the road

My spirit is with you

Wherever you go

 You have a purpose

And I have a plan

I’ll make you this promise

I’ll come back again

But until then

Go tell the world about me

I was dead, but now I live

Oh, I’ve gotta go now for a little while

But goodbye is not the end

Oh, go tell the world about me

I’ve gotta go

For a little while

But goodbye is not the end
