Does Anybody Hear Her

Mark Hall tells this one from outside the woman's own perspective — 'she is running... she is yearning... she is searching' — before the second half switches subject entirely to name who's failing to notice: 'under the shadow of our steeple, with all the lost and lonely people.' The song doesn't let 'the church' stay abstract; it puts the failure specifically under a literal steeple, in a specific congregation that could have seen her and didn't.

'If lofty glances from lofty people can't see past her scarlet letter, and we never even met her' pulls directly from John 8:7's account of the woman about to be stoned — 'he who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone' — applying the same scene to modern judgment rather than ancient law. Luke 15:4's shepherd leaving ninety-nine sheep to search for the one that's lost sits behind the title's repeated question; the song's whole argument is that this kind of searching is supposed to be the church's job, not an afterthought.
