Song Of A Broken Heart
Song Meaning
Casting Crowns spends the first two verses addressing someone else directly — 'I recognize your mask, I've worn it too' — before the third verse makes an unexpected turn: the same language used to describe a broken listener ('thrown away, used up and left behind') gets applied to Jesus himself. 'He was thrown away, used up and left behind, 'cause he was born to break' isn't softened or reworded for its second use; it's the identical description, which is the song's actual argument — Christ's suffering isn't a different category from human pain, it's the same wound, chosen deliberately.
Isaiah 53:5's 'he was pierced for our transgressions... by his wounds we are healed' sits directly behind 'he came with healing in his hands,' and Isaiah 61:3's promise of 'a garland for ashes' answers the title's own claim that brokenness can become 'something beautiful' rather than simply being erased. The closing plea — 'come living water, come flow through me' — turns the song from description into request, asking to become part of the same story just laid out rather than only observing it.
I knew right where to find you
I've hidden here many times before
I recognize your mask
I've worn it too
I'm not here to point a finger
I'm not here to change your mind
Just wanna sit here for a while
And talk to you
Have you ever felt thrown away
Used up and left behind
Like your heart was born to break
And you've given up the fight
Well I am here to say
He can take what's beaten down
To make something beautiful
Even the song of a broken heart
Song of a broken heart
You've got your walls
You've got your reasons
You're just fine with not believing
And I'm a broken record playing the same old line
And you can't hide behind your questions
It may serve you for a time
But you can't hide a broken heart
Behind a smile
Have you ever felt thrown away
Used up and left behind
Like your heart was born to break
And you've given up the fight
Well I am here to say
He can take what's beaten down
To make something beautiful
Even the song of a broken heart
Song of a broken heart
My Jesus was the God-man
He came with healing in His hands
The world was ready for His gifts
But not His plans
To hurt He was no stranger
Betrayed by those He trusted most
Left to face His darkest night alone
He was thrown away
Used up and left behind
'Cause He was born to break
He stood up to the fight
For a world that turned away
He was bruised and beaten down
To make something beautiful
He knows the song of a broken heart
Song of a broken heart
The song of a broken heart
The song of a broken heart
Jesus
Sing me a new song
Come living water
Come flow through me
And I will
Sing of Your glory
And I'll tell my story
Of how you set me free
