Thrive

Casting Crowns sets "Thrive" in "this worn and weary land where many a dream has died" — not a triumphant opening, but an honest one. The chorus answers that weariness with an image from Jeremiah 17:8: "like a tree planted by the water, we never will run dry," a tree whose roots reach deep enough that drought doesn't reach it.

That water imagery keeps developing through the song — "living water flowing through... fill our hearts and flood our souls" pulls directly from John 7:38, where Jesus describes "rivers of living water" flowing out of anyone who believes in him. The verses pair that inward filling with an outward push: "into your word we're digging deep... into the world we're reaching out to show them who you are."

The title itself is the song's real argument: "we know we were made for so much more than ordinary lives... it's time for us to more than just survive." Surviving and thriving aren't the same thing, and the repeated chant near the end — "joy unspeakable, faith unsinkable, love unstoppable" — names exactly what the difference looks like when it shows up.
