Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus
Song Meaning
Casting Crowns keeps this 1882 hymn almost entirely intact, and its argument is deliberately simple — trust isn't built on a dramatic experience but on 'just tak[ing] Him at His word,' resting on a promise rather than a feeling. Proverbs 3:5's instruction to 'trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding' is the whole hymn compressed into one line, written a good three thousand years before Louisa Stead's text but making the identical case.
'How I've proved Him o'er and o'er' is the hymn's quiet argument for why this trust isn't naive — not a single leap of faith, but something tested repeatedly and confirmed each time. The closing plea, 'O for grace to trust Him more,' admits that even settled trust isn't finished growing; the hymn doesn't end on certainty achieved but on certainty still being asked for, which keeps the whole thing from sounding like a testimony delivered from the far side of every doubt.
'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
Just to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
Just to know, "Thus saith the Lord."
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!
I'm so glad I learned to trust Him,
Precious Jesus, Savior, friend;
And I know that He is with me,
Will be with me to the end.
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!
O for grace to trust Him more!
