Blessed Assurance
Song Meaning
Two verses of the old hymn, and a chorus that repeats until it becomes a testimony, make up CeCe Winans' "Blessed Assurance." The opening claim, "Jesus is mine," comes before anything else, and the next line, "O what a foretaste of glory divine," turns it into a hope that begins now.
Four short phrases then describe the believer: "heir of salvation, purchased of God, born of His Spirit, washed in His blood." They line up with Titus 3:7 on being heirs, and with Revelation 1:5 on being freed from sins by His blood. The word "assurance" itself matches Hebrews 10:22, which urges drawing near in full assurance of faith.
The second verse is about nearness: "perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love." The refrain is the song's answer to all of it, "this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long," which echoes Psalm 71:8. The closing lines return to "story" and "praising my Savior" until the repetition becomes the point.
