Comforter

Cece Winans' “Comforter” gives thanks for God as the one who stays close in times of pain. The opening lines address him as “Faithful Friend and Father” and recall years of calling on him. He has been “Great Physician when sickness lingered near,” and in distressing moments his name has become “new and sweet.”

The chorus names the role plainly: “You are Comforter, that's who You are to me. Comforter, a name that fits so perfectly. Peace that passes all understanding.” The second verse widens the song beyond the singer, to “the grieving family who weeps for loved ones gone” and the pain of separation that consumes a home. The song says that “on the waves of sorrow, You walk with perfect ease,” and concludes that “Comforter is who the whole world needs.” The ending strings together titles for God, “Peace Giver, Life Changer, Joy River, Way Maker,” before returning to the main line. The song is slow and warm, and it is often chosen for services of mourning and for anyone walking through loss who needs a reminder that God draws near.

The promised Helper is John 14:16. The God of all comfort is 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, and the peace beyond understanding is Philippians 4:7.
