I Have Decided To Follow Jesus

CeCe Winans performs this nineteenth-century hymn — reportedly based on the dying words of a new convert in India — in its plainest, most repetitive form, and the repetition is doing real work. 'I have decided to follow Jesus' stated three times in a row isn't padding; it's the hymn enacting the same resolve it's describing, a decision restated until it sounds settled rather than tentative.

'The world behind me, the cross before me' echoes Luke 9:23's call to 'deny himself, take up his cross... and follow me,' and 'though none go with me, I still will follow' names the cost of that decision without softening it — the hymn doesn't promise companionship along the way, only commitment regardless of whether it comes. Philippians 3:14's image of pressing 'toward the goal for the prize of the high calling' sits behind the hymn's forward-facing posture; 'no turning back' isn't stated as a boast but as the simplest possible description of what deciding actually means.
