I Surrender All

Cece Winans keeps Judson Van DeVenter's hymn text unchanged, and the opening line commits to everything before explaining any of it: "all to Jesus I surrender, all to Him I freely give." No conditions get attached, no gradual buildup toward the decision.

The second verse pushes the surrender further, into territory most people would rather keep for themselves: "worldly pleasures all forsaken, take me, Jesus, take me now." That's not a metaphor for spiritual devotion in general — it names specific things being set down.

The final verse asks for something to fill the space that surrender leaves behind, rather than treating emptiness as the goal itself: "may Thy Holy Spirit fill me, may I know Thy power divine." Jesus' own instruction to deny yourself and take up your cross daily, and Paul's language of no longer living for himself but for Christ living in him, both sit behind a hymn built entirely around one repeated verb — giving something up isn't the endpoint, it's what makes room for something else.
