Thy Will Be Done
Song Meaning
CeCe Winans' “Thy Will Be Done” is a slow prayer that begins with a troubling picture. The first verse describes a man who takes what is not his, leaves a broken woman behind, and is hated enough to be killed. Time seems to stand still as the singers watch the scene, and in desperation they pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.”
The second verse widens the view. The picture grows beyond the screen, and while most feel pain for the victims, for some it is more than a movie scene. Instead of taking guard, they embrace the morning sun and ask for God's will. The chorus makes the prayer personal: thy will be done in me, thy will be done indeed, and while we are here waiting, let it begin with me. A later verse turns to another picture, a man held high upon a hill who is willing to pay for crimes that are not his, and the singers pray to the Son for his kingdom. The line about shower down on us a blessing closes the song. The song links the wrongs of the world to the cross and answers both with a request that change starts in the one who is praying. It suits a quiet service, a prayer time or a day of reflection.
The Lord's Prayer is Matthew 6:10. Jesus praying for the Father's will is Luke 22:42, and wounds that heal is Isaiah 53:5.
Of a man who takes what is not his
Leaving in his way a broken woman
And a man who hates enough to kill
One by one
Somehow we come to understand what that means
And in desperation's tongue
Pray thy kingdom come, pray thy will be done
Side by side we watch this picture
Even as it grows beyond the screen
Most of us in pain hurting for the victims
But for some of us its more than just a movie scene
As one by one
We become all too aware of what that truly means
And instead of taking guard we embrace the morning sun
Let thy will be done
[CHORUS]
Thy will be done in me
Thy will be done indeed
Thy will be done
But while we're here waiting
Oh let it be
And oh won't you let it begin with me
Oh lord please let it begin with me
Time stand still as we get the picture
Of a man held high upon a hill
Willing to pay though not convicted
Willing to pay for crimes not his
As one by one we all come to understand
What that really means
And pray to the son
Let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done
[CHORUS]
Thy will be done in me
Thy will be done indeed
Thy will be done
But while we're here waiting
Oh, let it be
Oh, thy will be done in me
Thy will be done indeed (let it be, let it be, let it be)
Thy will be done but while we're here waiting
Oh let it be
Oh won't you let it begin with me
Oh won't you let it begin with me
Oh won't you let it begin with me (Thy will be done)
Oh won't you let it begin with me (shower down on us a blessin) [x4]
Time stand still
