Crossroads Music keeps Horatio Spafford's 1873 text in its original form through both verses before adding a contemporary bridge that names specific, modern-sounding struggles the hymn's language doesn't use directly — 'all my worries, all my doubts... all my fears, all my shame.' Spafford's own grief (he wrote the hymn after losing his daughters at sea) stays implicit in the text; the new section makes the category of struggle explicit and personal instead.

'You lift my head up' echoes Psalm 3:3's image of God as 'a shield around me... the one who lifts up my head,' answering the specific worries and shame named just before it with a specific physical gesture rather than an abstract comfort. 'You're the God who overcomes,' repeated as the bridge's refrain, reaches for John 16:33's 'in the world you have oppression; but cheer up, I have overcome the world' — pairing Spafford's steady, settled hymn with a newer section that's more urgent and immediate, without either one canceling out the other's tone.
